2021: The Year That Could

Here we are, at the beginning of week three of 2021. Just ten days into the New Year and it’s already eventful. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget January 6, 2021. It’s going to join September 11th, June 26th, and July 20th as one of those “remember where you were when moments”. Well, okay so I wasn’t yet born when Neil Armstrong stepped down on the moon on July 20, 1969, but I think you guys get my drift. It’s been a few days, and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around what happened at the Capitol. I can remember quite clearly, talking to my friend Karen via Facebook Messenger. We were waiting for the count, knowing full well it would be a long process because objections were going to be made.

One moment we were listening to the objections about Arizona, and the next the camera is scanning the outside of the Capitol, where a crowd was forming. What happened over the next few hours was something right out of an episode of 24, or some other crazy nighttime drama. To say that the past four years have been interesting, would be an understatement. Our country is in bad shape, and that picture was forced into perfect clarity on Wednesday when a riot erupted and stormed the Capitol building. It turned what should have been an easy, quiet process into a nightmare. In the aftermath Democracy remains on life support. People died that day.

But okay, I’ll take a deep breath now that I have gotten that off my chest. Despite the eerie beginnings of this year, and the cloud that still hangs over the state of the government, there is a bright side, a silver-lining if you will. In ten days we’ll usher in a new era. We’ll start to see an end to this period of isolation we’ve fallen into. There will be a light at the end of this dark tunnel, and breathing will become a lot easier. Will this happen over night? Of course not, Rome wasn’t built in a day after all. I choose to look ahead, to focus on today and what I can control as we navigate this new year. I have goals i want to accomplish, i’m sure all of us do right?

I started this post because I wanted to talk about writing, but Wednesday derailed any thought of the impending novel i still need to write, I will get cracking on it though. I have been reading some amazing books here at the beginning of the year. My favorite author of the moment is Michelle Notaro. I just love the way she weaves story and her characters are so lovable. Reading is giving me the motivation I need to get my own story out there. I am thinking I might even try writing the synopsis for More Than Just one Night in the voices of Jayse and Ian since it’s their story. It would fit the fact that the story is in first person with dual narration. We’ll see what happens.

If you’ve made it this far I thank you for reading! I am learning about writing content that readers will want to read. I have a long way to go with that, but I will keep pushing forward until I get it. That’s my lesson for today, don’t let the world get you down. If you hit a roadblock, find a way around it and keep on pushing. Sometimes its not the destination that’s most important. It’s the journey.
